Ireland’s First Asia Studies network

A new network to link Ireland’s Asia watchers was established at UCC on Thursday, 13th November 2008. Representatives from Irish universities, think-tanks, cultural entities, business, and public administration set up a new organisation to promote the study, teaching and research of topics relating to Asia, in particular EU-Asia related matters. It is the first network of its kind on the island of Ireland and will link up with similar organisations in the EU and in Asia.

Social and economic development in Asia has a growing impact on European countries. Ireland’s open economy is increasingly dependent on exchanges with the economies of Japan, China, India, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam and Taiwan. The Government’s Asia Strategy provides for wider representation of Ireland in the region, for closer person-to-person links and for the improvement of Irish research and teaching. A.S.I.A. will function as a point of access for all interested in these developments and act as a source for networking and information bringing together Universities, Institutes of Technology and think tanks on the island of Ireland. A.S.I.A. plans to contribute to the comprehensive and systematic development of Asian Studies in Ireland.

The launch of A.S.I.A. was publicly welcomed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Micheál Martin TD, who delivered the keynote address at the second Annual International Conference of the Irish Institute of Chinese Studies in UCC on 14 November. The Minister and the Asian Ambassadors attending the Conference called for improved understanding, study and research on Asian issues.

A.S.I.A. elected as its first president Professor Fan Hong, Director of the Irish Institute of Chinese Studies at UCC. Dr T P Hardiman, Chairman of the Chester Beatty Library will act as Chairman of the Advisory Council of A.S.I.A. Ireland. Dr Joern-Carsten Gottwald will serve as Secretary and the secretariat will be located in the Irish Institute of Chinese Studies, O’Rahilly Building, University College Cork.
